7 Reasons to Sell Your Soul to the Devil According to the Movies
In Alexandre Aja's Horns, Daniel Radcliffe's Ig finds himself wrongly accused of murdering the love of his life. Framed and desperate, he awakes one morning with horns sprouting out of his head and newfound Satanic powers. You can guess what happens next.
Although Ig's deal with the forces of Hell is left intentionally vague, it's another example in a long line of movies where the protagonist (or someone close to the protagonist) gives up their soul to get something they desire. So join us, won't you, as we take a quick tour through the decades and examine some of the more memorable times that movie characters have sold their soul to the Devil.
The Reason for Soul Selling: Faust's hometown is beset by the plague, which is causing... Read More
The Last Horror Blog: Celebrate Halloween with These Classic Dr. Loomis Quotes
Welcome to The Last Horror Blog, a biweekly column on all things horror.
When one thinks about the Halloween franchise, the first thing that springs to mind is Michael Myers and his quest to kill his sister Laurie Strode (and later, her daughter). Myers is one of the screen’s all-time great bogeymen, a silent slasher hidden behind an emotionless, modified William Shatner mask. Myers makes the Halloween franchise special, but it’s always been my contention that the films genuinely work as well as they do (yes, even the much maligned sequels) not because of the killer, but because of the man chasing the killer.
Donald Pleasence’s Dr. Sam Loomis doesn’t get all the guts and glory in the Halloween franchise, but the doctor who first tried to... Read More
Learn the Real Stories Behind the Crazy Cameramen Who Inspired 'Nightcrawler'
Nightcrawler isn't just one of the best movies opening this fall, it's one of the best of the year. It scratches at the underbelly of our relationship with modern media by asking the question just who exactly films all the carnage we see on nightly news, and why is it even on the news in the first place? And as shocking (and darkly comedic) as the movie is to watch, it's a bit unnerving to know it's all based in the real world.
Jake Gyllenhaal's entrepreneurial sociopath who quickly learns the ropes of what makes for good footage is entirely writer-director Dan Gilroy's invention, but nightcrawlers are a very real thing. To better understand what it was like to live the life of someone who did such an unsavory job for a living, naturally Gilroy and... Read More
First Look at 'Terminator: Genisys' Reveals the Movie's Big Twist [Updated with New Pictures]
Update: EW has released a few more images and storyboards from the film, which have been added below.
As seen by this cover image, Entertainment Weekly has published its obituary issue dedicated to the Terminator franchise.
Oh, what's that? That's not what EW is doing? That's actually the world's first look at the new movie, Terminator: Genisys? Oh...
Obviously these two magazine covers are not actual stills from the movie. They're from a photoshoot done to promote that the magazine has a piece dedicated to the movie, and maybe when it hits newstands this week it'll have some actual stills inside it. But even knowing that, this is the first exposure mainstream media is going to have to a new Terminator movie.
It's also bizarre how brazenly... Read More

The MPAA Officially Bans Google Glass and Similar Devices from Movie Theaters
The Motion Picture Association of America isn’t known for making friends with its policies and now the organization has a few more restrictions to throw at audiences. The industry group has banned “wearable devices” from theaters, meaning they must be powered off when the movie starts. It’s part of the MPAA’s continued effort to increase their antipiracy policies.
"Individuals who fail or refuse to put the recording devices away may be asked to leave. If theater managers have indications that illegal recording activity is taking place, they will alert law enforcement authorities when appropriate, who will determine what further action should be taken," the MPAA and National Association of Theatre Owners... Watch: ESPN Is Going Full 'Star Wars' for Halloween Special
Star Wars and the phrase “holiday special” don’t have the best history (as you can see here), but that isn’t stopping ESPN2’s SportsNation from paying homage to George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away tonight with its Star Wars Halloween Special.
If you’re wondering what ESPN2 and Star Wars have in common, I’ve got no answer -- aside from the fact that Disney owns ESPN – but if we get an opportunity to see Darth Vader, Han Solo, Boba Fett, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO and Chopper (from the new animated series Star Wars Rebels), I’m interested.
The show is going all out to celebrate Star Wars, turning the set into a re-creation of the Millennium Falcon, and running its usual sports highlight clips with themed category titles... Read More
What Is the Weirdest Left Turn Taken by a Movie Franchise?
After reading the plot synopsis for Terminator: Genisys today, some of you may have thought it was a very early April Fools' prank. Or a slightly early instance of a Mischief Night trick making its way onto the Internet. Nice job, Paramount, with your equivalent of toilet papering my house! Good joke, making that title a little less goofy by comparison! But it's real, just the latest act by Hollywood to go totally crazy with a franchise that maybe should have just died a long time ago.
It happens with a lot of them, even the best of them. Franchises jump the shark all the time, but this Genisys thing is beyond that. The Terminator franchise already jumped the shark, a few times actually. I'd say the idea for the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to be a good guy in... Read More
