The Geek Beat: 8 Geeky Things to Be Thankful for This Year
Now that Halloween is in the rearview mirror, Thanksgiving is on the horizon – and the geekier side of Hollywood has provided quite the cornucopia of things to be thankful for this year.
Last year, I gave thanks for fresh zombie stories, overseas audiences and various other elements of the year's cinematic slate that made 2013 a good time to be a geek, and this year has provided a whole new set of reasons to be glad about the last 12 months (and look forward to the next 12, of course). From leading men making a name for themselves in genre movies to sci-fi adventures that don't sacrifice science, Hollywood has given geeks a lot to celebrate this year.
Here are eight things I'm thankful for:
Fans of Parks and Recreation have had... Read More
New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Expendables 3,' 'What If,' Plus: An Exclusive 'A Madea Christmas' Clip
Notable New Releases
It's an odd week for new releases, presumably because most studios know that shoppers are going to be saving their dough for discounted old releases on Black Friday instead of a ton of new releases on a standard Tuesday. With that in mind, there are a few noteworthy options. Stretch calls to mind a spate of '90s comedies set over the course of one increasingly chaotic night. It's weird and a bit out there, but Patrick Wilson and Chris Pine really stand out.
Then there's the middle-of-the-road movies, The Expendables 3 and The Giver. If you're a fan of either brand, you're probably going to do just fine with the movies, which... Read More
Watch: The Creepy Real-Life 'Foxcatcher' Documentary Starring John du Pont
When it comes to this year's creepier awards contenders, Foxcatcher has to be near the top of the list. Bennett Miller's film based on the real-life story of multimillionaire John du Pont (Steve Carell) and his bizarre relationship with Olympic wrestlers -- and brothers -- Mark (Channing Tatum) and David Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) plays out like a slow-burn thriller, featuring tremendous acting to go with a story that'll body-slam your emotions by the time it all wraps up.
What we learn about John du Pont throughout the film is that he's a sociopath whose years of being trapped in his mother's shadow slowly pick away at his sense of being, transforming him into a person who desires his own fame and success, but only knows one way to go about achieving it... Read More
Indie Spirit Awards: Your First Look at This Year's Potential Oscar Contenders
The Indie Spirit Award nominations have officially arrived on the scene, signaling a busy few months full of various groups from around the country (and the world) announcing their own picks for the best of the year in movies. The Indie Spirit Awards honor films that were American productions (except where noted) and made for less than $20 million, so while this list definitely represents some of the best movies of the year, there are others -- like The Imitation Game, Wild, The Theory of Everything and Unbroken, to name a few -- that we expect to see in the mix as the Academy Awards approach.
Still, the Indie Spirits are pretty good at predicting awards buzz -- 12 Years a Slave won Best Feature last year and it went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars -- so use it as an early... Read More

'Pan' Trailer: See Peter Pan's Wild, Colorful Origin Story
It was Oprah Winfrey who once famously prophesied, "You get an origin story! And you get an origin story! Everybody gets an origin story!"
At least it certainly seems that way these days, and the latest pop-culture icon to get a reimagining is Peter Pan. Obviously there have already been countless versions of this story in the past (and NBC is weeks away from a live broadcast of a new Peter Pan play), but what makes Pan different is that Hook isn't a bad guy. At least based on this first trailer, that is.
Just going off first glances, you might think that Hugh Jackman is playing Hook in this new movie, from director Joe Wright (Hanna, Pride & Prejudice), but he's actually Blackbeard. Garrett Headland is Hook, Rooney Mara is Tiger Lily, and newcomer... Read More
The Full 'Jurassic World' Trailer: Chris Pratt! Velociraptors! Chaos!
Surprise! Universal has just released the full Jurassic World trailer online for everyone to see. Director Colin Trevorrow tweeted, "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the park will be opening early." And just minutes later the first, complete look at the highly, highly anticipated sequel officially premiered on YouTube.
Here's the basic plot, as seen in the trailer: Business is doing well enough at Jurassic World, but well enough isn't always good enough and so the company that now runs the theme park decides to breed a genetically modified dinosaur. In the words of Chris Pratt's character, who plays a zoologist at the park, "You just went and made a new dinosaur? Probably not a good idea."
What's great about this trailer is that it... Read More

Matthew McConaughey May Play This Major Role in Stephen King's 'The Stand' Adaptation
It’s Matthew McConaughey’s world at this point – the rest of us are just living in it. The star, who’s earned accolades for his recent work in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and HBO’s True Detective, is now reportedly very close to tackling the role of the villainous Randall Flagg – the ultimate force of evil in Stephen King’s postapocalyptic 1978 novel The Stand.
There were rumors that McConaughey was being eyed for the part a few weeks ago, and it appears there was at least some truth to those early reports. While McConaughey hasn’t been officially cast in director Josh Boone’s new adaptation (which has now been expanded from one three-hour film to four stand-alone entries), word is that it’s close to...
