Track Every Animated Disney Movie with This Very Cool Timeline
Creator and Disney fan Aish's chronological chart spans centuries, starting in 65 million B.C. and into… infinity. One of the great things about Disney cinema is the company’s universality—the ability to create compelling stories that are relatable and share valuable life lessons, no matter the time period. It’s the formula that keeps on giving and has provided for generations of audiences. Note: “Excludes most of the package films. Some films, e.g. The Lion King, are impossible to pin down exactly and some, like Aladdin and Treasure Planet, are anachronistic, so these are estimations. A few have been split into two if there is more than one time period in the movie, and sequels have been put together.” You can check out...

Watch: A Short Film About a Treehouse That's Guaranteed to Make You Cry
Grab a box of tissues, and get ready for a good cry. Sam Shapson and A.J. Sheeran’s short film The Treehouse is an emotional sci-fi-tinged tale that is sure to tug at the heartstrings. Matt and Angela share a tragic past, and both neighborhood kids want to see their mothers again. But it takes Angela’s intergalactical solution to help Matt come to a greater place of understanding.  The story is transformed from a tale of loss into a tale of empathy. The Treehouse is a real passion project, funded through Kickstarter and the filmmakers’ own savings. They made the short during university several years ago, but it’s just now finding its way online. The movie is touching enough on its own, but we could totally see someone picking this one up for a...

Who are the Schmoes, and what exactly do they know? The Schmoes are a couple of regular guys, Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis, who--like you--are the people for whom movies are made. The Last Sci-fi Blog: Science Fiction at Fantastic Fest 2014
Although the film lineup at Fantastic Fest 2014 was stronger than any I've seen since I started attending the fest five years ago, it was not an especially big year for science fiction. Horror, action and even dramas were well represented, but there were only a few science fiction movies on the schedule. Some, like Automata, only played once and were missed. Others, like Realiti and The Incident, flew under the radar. However, there was good sci-fi at the fest this year and the films that I did see were generally good (and wildly different from one another).   Closer to God Told with shades of early David Cronenberg, Closer to God follows a scientist who creates the first human clone and ignites a media firestorm. As the nation struggles with the morality of...

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week
Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week. Jupiter Ascending “We’ve been taught that the birthplace of the human race is Earth... but it’s not” is one heckuva opening line of dialogue. This new Jupiter Ascending trailer does come with a fair amount of outrageous sci-fi landscape/creature nonsense, but thanks to that one bit of exposition, it works well enough. We really do believe the human race began on Earth, so to hear someone suggest otherwise is intrinsically intriguing and shocking, and it also successfully helps ease the viewer into the film's out-of-this-world scenario.   Big Hero 6 Baymax can do no wrong. Whether...

Reminder: It's Okay to Think a Movie Is "Just Good"
[The Hive] A weird thing happened at Fantastic Fest this year. Well, a lot of weird things happened at Fantastic Fest because it's a film festival that specializes in the weird, but one thing in particular kept happening over and over: People gave me a strange, defeated look when I said a movie was good. If you've never been to a film festival before, here's how it typically works: A handful of movies all play around the same time and then while you're waiting for the next movie to start, everyone stands around talking about what they'd just seen. And since not everyone sees the same movie at the same time, this turns into a great way of measuring audience buzz for things so you can decide if you need to see a movie later in the festival. With that in mind...

Keanu Reeves Tells Us All About 'John Wick,' the Best American Action Movie of the Year
John Wick is the badass, hard-core, R-rated Hollywood action movie you probably didn't even know you'd been waiting all year to see. It stars Keanu Reeves as a former mob hit man who is quietly living a retired life when some dumb mobster goon decides to steal his car. In doing so, said mobster inadvertently takes the one thing Reeves still cared about in the world. His response is an unrelenting war path to teach this kid the ultimate lesson. And when I say warpath, I mean it. The amount of action in this movie is stunning. And since John Wick is the directorial debut of a pair of A-list stuntmen (who were Reeves' stunt doubles going way back to Point Break), you can understand why the action is the best you'll see all year from a Hollywood production. I do keep...

The Hilariously Creepy Story Behind This Vintage Chris Pratt Photo
Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt recently shared his first head shot ever taken on Instagram—and boy was it a doozy. The image falls somewhere between Fabio-esque romance novel cover and porn-star territory. Wanting to know the story behind the beefcake image, Jimmy Fallon interviewed Pratt on The Tonight Show to get the dirt. Pratt apparently met a photographer at a post office in West Hollywood, just after moving to Los Angeles to become an actor and realizing he had no idea what he was doing. The shutterbug took the young hopeful back to his apartment. This is the part of the story where things could have turned weird and pervy, but the photographer turned out to be an upstanding guy -- and the goofy image helped the star get a part on the WB’s...
