The Best Movie Trailers of the Week
Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week. Annabelle That very first teaser for Annabelle was a good one, but this full trailer goes above and beyond. It doesn’t offer up just one good scare and call it quits. There’s a bunch of very effective creepy moments and they’re all incredibly different. We’ve got director John R. Leonetti establishing an exceptionally eerie environment by utilizing all layers of his frame in one moment, and another where he toys with the audience by hinting at the bloodshed to come. Then there’s that scene at the very end of the piece where an appearance shift catches you totally off-guard. This is some smart...

Watch This Sexy, Tantalizing Lingerie Ad Written and Directed by Penélope Cruz
When Penélope Cruz isn’t busy making out with Scientologists, palling around with Pedro Almodóvar, or being addicted to breastfeeding, she’s apparently writing and directing sexy ads for Agent Provocateur. Cruz’s flesh-baring video for the British lingerie brand features a group of models in the desert and one very helpless man. We’ll let you uncover the threadbare narrative for yourself — and we’re taking bets on whether or not the women perform an aerobics routine or actually dance. Don’t blink and miss the Cruz cameo, too. You can catch the Spanish actress in the upcoming Louis Leterrier film Grimsby with Isla Fisher and Rebel Wilson — cowritten by Sacha Baron Cohen, Phil Johnston and Peter Baynham. [via Design...

See What Classic Movie Scene Max Landis Re-created for His Father's Birthday
Chronicle screenwriter and A-class nerd Max Landis, son of director John Landis, recently gave his father a birthday present he won’t soon forget. In a homemade (or sweded, if you prefer) version of An American Werewolf in London, the elder Landis’ 1981 film, the younger Landis re-creates the famous transformation scene. This is amazing because papa Landis won critical acclaim for the sequence (spooky in its realism, for the time), featuring Oscar-winning special effects by Rick Baker. Young Landis remade the scene shot for shot, depicting David Naughton’s character’s visceral transformation into a howling werewolf. You can watch the homemade scene alone and in a side-by-side comparison, below. The plastic Dracula teeth and stuffed-animal effects...

Reel TV: ''Godzilla' Writer and Steven Spielberg Bringing 'Minority Report' to the Small Screen
It's easy for a movie to come and go these days without leaving much of a dent on our cultural vernacular. However, even 12 years after Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise gave us the world of PreCrime police officer John Anderton*, people constantly reference Minority Report. Any kind of technology that involves predicting people's behavior gets tied to Minority Report, as does any sort of user interface where someone is using their hands to swipe through a visual minefield of data, or interactive ads. But it has been 12 years since the movie hit, so maybe it's time for a new generation to get in on the psychic, crime-fighting fun. At least Spielberg is hoping that's the case, because The Wrap tells us he's enlisted Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein to turn the...

Is This the Future of Netflix?
Technology is constantly evolving, and companies that want to survive in the long term had better keep up with current trends while pushing the boundaries of what is possible. This is the idea that drives Netflix’s annual Hack Day – a day when the company’s employees can come up with new ways to make the video rental and streaming juggernaut cooler and more advanced. The biggest hit of this year’s event is Oculix – a demo that shows how a user might interact with Netflix’s various screens using the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. If you’ve ever watched Tom Cruise in Minority Report, this might look a bit familiar (only Cruise didn’t have to strap a giant VR headset to his noggin for the cool effects in the film). The video...

Here Are All of Quentin Tarantino's Best Music Scenes in One Video
If there’s one thing that immediately hits the viewer when watching a Quentin Tarantino film, it’s that music is extremely crucial to the atmosphere and narrative of his work. In an interview with Contact Music, Tarantino spoke about his writing process and how music plays a large role in the way he works. The quote is too good to chop up, so brace yourself for a novel-length explanation, below. While you’re here, check out this supercut of Tarantino music scenes, featuring the extremely danceable Pulp Fiction, Death Proof and more.  Music is very important in my movies. In some ways the most important stage, whether it ends up being in the movie or not, is when I come up with the idea itself, before I've actually sat down and started...
