The Year's Best Date Movie Is Returning to Theaters Next Week
Fact is, any movie these days can be a good date movie, depending on the various eclectic moviegoing tastes of you and your significant other. You both like comedy? See something funny. You both like horror? See something scary. But in our opinion, the perfect date movie is one that fuels the entire date night. If you plan to grab a bite to eat before or after the movie, it's great when the actual movie can be a part of that experience too. This is why Jon Favreau's Chef is a bit of a special movie, and it's not just us who think that. After its debut in early May, Chef inched across the nation and slowly grossed $30 million, which is pretty spectacular for a small indie flick in a season full of giant, explosive money-makers. It's become such a fan favorite that...

Exodus: Gods and Kings: Sigourney Weaver is featured in a new photo from Exodus: Gods and Kings. Weaver co-stars as the mother of Ramses (Joel Edgerton), though her costumes are anything but matronly. Christian Bale stars as Moses in the movie, directed by Ridley Scott, which is heading for theatrical release on December 12. [EW.com]     Yoga Hosers: Johnny Depp will play a "legendary man-hunter" alongside his daughter Lily-Rose Depp in Kevin Smith's upcoming "comic book movie" Yoga Hosers. Depp's daughter will be teamed again with Smith's daughter, Harley Quinn Smith, as 15-year-old yoga nuts who must deal with "an ancient evil." Director’s Notebook: Ti West on the Most Important Scene in ‘The Sacrament’
In this monthly column we spotlight new Blu-ray/DVD releases by interviewing directors about the scenes that stood out most for them while making their movies. This month, we talk to Ti West about his latest horror, The Sacrament (on sale August 19, 2014). Never one to shy away from a challenge, Ti West’s latest film, The Sacrament, is perhaps his most audacious endeavor yet as he goes down the mock-documentary rabbit hole to create a chilling first-person thriller that won’t leave you anytime soon. Inspired by the horrific Jonestown Massacre in 1978 where over 900 people committed suicide while living in a religious community in Guyana under the leadership of Jim Jones, we follow Sam (AJ Bowen), a journalist from Vice, and his cameraman (Joe Swanberg) as they are...

Marvel Countdown: Will Disney Ignore Marvel's Horror Legacy?
Disney’s upcoming Big Hero Six is interesting in that it opens up the possibilities of what kind of Marvel movies Disney is interested in making with properties already under its control. This animated adventure-comedy is the first bit of cinematic diversification since Marvel came under the Disney banner in 2009, and the studio's got more planned for 2015. Street-level heroes like Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones (of the comic Alias) will soon have their own live-action Netflix original series and word is that these will be a touch more gritty and adult than what we’ve been offered by Marvel Studios up to this point. Could we see an eventual return to Marvel horror? Marvel Studios came into its own with 2008’s Iron Man and it...

Watch: Are These the 10 Greatest Improvised Scenes in Movie History?
Film is a collaborative medium, one wherein a vast and diverse group of people come together with a plan that must gel into a cohesive (and entertaining) whole. Screenwriters create a skeleton that a director and actors build upon, but sometimes the blueprint is merely a guide – and not an etched-in-stone plan to be followed to the letter. Improv plays a huge role in cinema, and the guys at Cinefix have crafted this video highlighting 10 of the greatest improvised scenes in movie history. From Apocalypse Now through to Bridesmaids, this 10-minute-long clip covers some great scenes that weren’t in the shooting script of their respective films. It’s a cool piece of movie history for fans who may not have realized that some of cinema’s most enduring...

Is This the Best Way to Integrate Texting into Movies?
Tony Zhou, who heads up the Every Frame a Painting series on Vimeo, recently wondered how filmmakers can better depict text messaging and the Internet in cinema. In a new video essay, he explores the ways television series like Sherlock and films such as The Fifth Estate have done away with the cell phone-screen cliché to depict text messages between characters. These films and TV shows are using a simple, but artfully designed “beyond screen” method where floating text suggests the act of texting without all the obnoxious and outdated cutaways. As Zhou explains, it’s not only cheap and easy, since filmmakers can add the effect after shooting, but it also offers an uninterrupted view of the action on-screen. Thanks to these savvy filmmakers, we no...

'Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Director Explains Differences from the Books
Don’t expect any major changes from Suzanne Collins’ 2010 novel in the upcoming Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, but there will be a few new details presented to audiences. “Instead of changing the plot and changing characters what we did was have the opportunity to show scenes that could have been happening at different times in the book,” director Francis Lawrence told Entertainment Weekly. “For us it’s world expansion instead of changing things. I think it’s exciting for the fan to see certain things. So we’ve been able to open the world up in this and see some new places. We get to see some new districts this time and the scope gets quite large.” In Mockingjay, Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss struggles...

Watch: David Letterman's Great 10-Minute Tribute to Robin Williams
When we wrote about the passing of Robin Williams last week, one of the things we touched on was just how incredible the comedic star was as a guest on late-night talk shows. Williams was always at his most hilariously unpredictable when he strolled onto a late-night stage, with his appearances (almost 50!) on The Late Show with David Letterman ranking among our personal favorites. The Late Show was off last week, and so host David Letterman returned on Monday to say a few words about a guy he was friends with for 38 years. Letterman's tribute lasted a little more than 10 minutes, and included some great stories about first meeting Williams at the Comedy Store when they were both just starting out. There's a tale about a Mork & Mindy cameo Letterman shouldn't have...

Get a First Official Look at Paul Rudd in Marvel's 'Ant-Man'
What you see above is the first official image of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang in Marvel's next big stand-alone movie, Ant-Man. Now, if you were expecting him to be riding on a giant ant, you're probably a little disappointed, but just remember we're at the earliest stages of filming now. In fact, production didn't officially start on the project until this week. In the movie, now being directed by Peyton Reed (Bring It On), Rudd's Lang character is a con man who meets a genius inventor, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), who helps him get back on the right track. One of Pym's employees (Corey Stoll) wants to use Pym's incredible shrinking technology to somehow harm the world, and so Pym gifts his Ant-Man suit and technology to Lang in order to help him stop it...
