Whoa! Watch the First Trailer for 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'
Just when you thought you'd be waiting a whole week to watch the first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, those devious troublemakers over at Hydra have cracked Marvel's secret trailer codes and leaked a dark first look at what's poised to be one of next year's biggest movies.    Responding to the early leak via Twitter, Marvel had this to say...   Dammit, Hydra. — Marvel Entertainment (@Marvel) October 22, 2014   Forget Hydra, this is definitely one of the darkest trailers we've seen for a Marvel Studios movie -- but that just further proves how massive the sequel will be. It will have huge ramifications for all the major characters, and the Marvel cinematic universe will not look the same when it's over. Look...

The Geek Beat: These 17 Movies Will Guarantee a Geektastic Halloween Marathon
Halloween arrives in just under two weeks, and that leaves more than enough time for a few scary-movie screenings. Even if you're not typically a horror buff, you might want to find room in your schedule for some of the movies in this two-part list – because they all have connections to some of the biggest geek-friendly films on the horizon. Some of the films feature fanboy filmmakers' early projects, while others put the spotlight on actors who took a detour into horror on their way to establishing their geek-cinema cred. Of course, you shouldn't need an excuse to watch scary movies during the Halloween season, but let's be honest: for one reason or another, sometimes we all need a little nudge to take that plunge. Fellow geeks, if you haven't kicked...

Comics on Film: Is DC Comics Too Late to the Movie Party?
Last week, Warner Bros. made a major announcement concerning the future of DC Comics-based characters on film: namely, that there would be one. The studio has predominantly been hit with a case of chronic cold feet outside the likes of Batman and Superman, but with a series of several new movies confirmed through the year 2020, it looks like it finally has its act together. Still though, in a cinematic climate where the characters of rival publisher Marvel Comics have cemented their domination of superhero cinema, will the studio be too late to the game? Or, will its material bring about a viable alternative to the Marvel characters by offering the likes of the Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, a new Green Lantern, and more Batman and Superman?   On the One Hand:  The...

The YA Countdown: New 'Hunger Games' Footage, a 'Mortal Instruments' TV Show, and More
Welcome to the YA Movie Countdown, our resident expert’s guide to young-adult book-to-film adaptations. THE MAZE RUNNER The Maze Runner just wrapped its fifth weekend in theaters and brought in another $4.4 million, bringing its domestic grand total to over $90 million. Tack on the film’s international income and that brings the worldwide total to over $250 million, a solid sum for a movie that reportedly cost just $34 million to make. Naturally, 20th Century Fox is moving forward with the sequel The Scorch Trials, and with the film due to hit theaters in less than a year (September 18, 2015, to be exact) director Wes Bell is busy casting up. In addition to his surviving stars from the first film, Ball’s also got these folks on the roster: 1...

Oh, We're Totally Getting a New Pee-wee Herman Movie Real Soon
The world needs more Pee-wee Herman in it again, which is why we’re delighted to find out that a new film from the rosy-cheeked funnyman will be going into production in 2015. The project has been in development with Judd Apatow, going through a rewrite. And now Rolling Stone finally has an update for us: "There’s going to be a big announcement any minute now... Yes. It’s been months and months of being right on the verge of being announced…," Paul Reubens, aka Pee-wee, told the mag. "I thought something was going to go public yesterday, actually, and that you’d be the first person I’d be talking about this with. But I’m thinking there will be something made public very soon. It’s going to get made shortly after the...

'The Gambler' Red-Band Trailer: Watch John Goodman Curse You Out
Mark Wahlberg plays a literature professor whose gambling addiction gets him way more than he bargained for when he gets mixed up with a bunch of mobsters. That's the set up for The Gambler -- a remake of the 1974 film starring James Caan -- and the first foul-mouthed trailer has arrived online just in time to remind you how much you love John Goodman when he gets his hands on a nice, juicy role.  WARNING: The following trailer is NSFW and contains foul language. Directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and starring Wahlberg, Goodman, Jessica Lange and Brie Larson, The Gambler looks like a shiny piece of badass -- sort of how you feel sitting in front of a bunch of casino chips, just waiting to risk 'em all because... f**k it.  Wahlberg...

'Chronicle' Writer Publishes His Disastrous 'Super Mario World' Screenplay Online
When Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis started tweeting excerpts from a 436-page script for a Super Mario World movie he dreamed of making back when he was 19, I thought the whole thing was a joke. Sure, the screenwriter posted some photos of pages – but anyone could write a few scenes to make the gag seem real. It just didn’t seem feasible to me that someone would actually write 436 pages of script about a Super Nintendo game… but I was wrong. As it turns out, Landis did indeed write a novel’s worth of words about Mario’s biggest (at the time) adventure – and now he’s sharing the whole thing (and some concept art) with his fans. I’ll probably never read the entirety of Landis’ ode to the portly little plumber, but the story of...

Watch: This Will Be the Scariest 60 Seconds of Your Day
Sometimes the best movies are mere minutes long. Take Ignacio F. Rodó’s chilling one-minute horror film called Tuck Me In. A little boy is snuggled under the blankets ready to sleep. His father goes through their nighttime ritual, tucking him into bed. “You forgot to look under the bed,” the smiling boy tells his dad. And that’s when things take a turn for the creepy. But best of all, the twist is not what we’re expecting. The short is based on a two-sentence horror story that was submitted to an AskReddit thread by Juan J. Ruiz, aka justAnotherMuffledVo. Pleasant nightmares, and happy Halloween! For more minute-long movies, visit the Filminute YouTube channel.     MORE FROM AROUND THE WEB: ZergNet (function() { var...

An Awesome Real-Life 'Back to the Future Part II' Hoverboard Has Been Created to Help Save Lives
We may not have flying cars or power-lacing shoes, but the hoverboard in Back to the Future Part II is now one step closer to reality. Break open the piggy bank, though, because this awesome piece of the future is gonna cost you. Inventor Greg Henderson and his company Arx Pax have revealed The Hendo – the world’s first fully functional hoverboard – although the visionary creator imagines more noble uses for his new technology than just allowing skaters to get their grind on. Henderson sees the new technology helping to save buildings in earthquakes and floods by raising them above danger, and assisting in making train and air travel safer and more cost effective. How does it work, you ask? It's all about magnets. Using electromagnetism and Lenz’s...

When You Can Watch the First 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Trailer
Ever since Avengers: Age of Ultron blew the lid of San Diego Comic-Con with a tremendous preview of new footage, fans have been itching (and scratching, and clawing) to see the first official trailer for the superhero sequel, due in theaters on May 1, 2015. Good news is we now know when that trailer will arrive. Bad news... well, you need to wait another week. As announced at the end of this week's episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer will premiere on TV following next week's S.H.I.E.L.D. episode. We assume it will then drop online simultaneously, as well as in theaters Halloween weekend. Here's the announcement Marvel made on Twitter, and the image the studio uses gives us a good indication as to what we'll be...
