Indie Spirit Awards: Your First Look At This Year's Potential Oscar Contenders
The Indie Spirit Award nominations have officially arrived on the scene, signaling a busy few months full of various groups from around the country (and the world) announcing their own picks for the best of the year in movies. The Indie Spirit Awards honor films that were American productions (except where noted) and made for less than $20 million, so while this list definitely represents some of the best movies of the year, there are others -- like The Imitation Game, Wild, The Theory of Everything and Unbroken, to name a few -- that we expect to see in the mix as the Academy Awards approach. Still, the Indie Spirits are pretty good at predicting awards buzz -- 12 Years a Slave won Best Feature last year and it went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars -- so use it as an early...

'Pan' Trailer: See Peter Pan's Wild, Colorful Origin Story
It was Oprah Winfrey who once famously prophesied, "You get an origin story! And you get an origin story! Everybody gets an origin story!" At least it certainly seems that way these days, and the latest pop culture icon to get a re-imagining is Peter Pan. Obviously there have already been countless versions of this story in the past (and NBC is weeks away from a live broadcast of a new Peter Pan play), but what makes Pan different is that Hook isn't a bad guy. At least based on this first trailer, that is. Just going off first glances, you might think that Hugh Jackman is playing Hook in this new movie, from director Joe Wright (Hanna, Pride & Prejudice), but he's actually Blackbeard. Garrett Headland is Hook, Rooney Mara is Tiger Lily, and newcomer...

The Full 'Jurassic World' Trailer: Chris Pratt! Velociraptors! Chaos!
Surprise! Universal has just released the full Jurassic World trailer online for everyone to see. Director Colin Trevorrow tweeted, "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the park will be opening early." And just minutes later the first, complete look at the highly, highly anticipated sequel officially premiered on YouTube. Here's the basic plot, as seen in the trailer: Business is doing well enough at Jurassic World, but well enough isn't always good enough and so the company that now runs the theme park decides to breed a genetically modified dinosaur. In the words of Chris Pratt's character, who plays a zoologist at the park, "You just went and made a new dinosaur? Probably not a good idea." What's great about this trailer is that it...

Matthew McConaughey May Play This Major Role in Stephen King's 'The Stand' Adaptation
It’s Matthew McConaughey’s world at this point – the rest of us are just living in it. The star, who’s earned accolades for his recent work in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and HBO’s True Detective, is now reportedly very close to tackling the role of the villainous Randall Flagg – the ultimate force of evil in Stephen King’s postapocalyptic 1978 novel The Stand. There were rumors that McConaughey was being eyed for the part a few weeks ago, and it appears there was at least some truth to those early reports. While McConaughey hasn’t been officially cast in director Josh Boone’s new adaptation (which has now been expanded from one three-hour film to four stand-alone entries), word is that it’s close to...

Your Top Three: Side Characters from Movies
Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. This is a good week to celebrate sides. Just as your Thanksgiving meal would be nothing without the cranberry sauce and the green bean casserole, few movies work with just a main dish -- or main character -- alone. Perfectly timed, we're in the mood right now for some sides when it comes to characters, as well. The penguins of Madagascar have their own movie coming out Wednesday, and meanwhile the internerds are abuzz about the first Star Wars spin-off supposedly starring a bunch of bounty hunters who we've maybe just barely seen on-screen before.  There's something different about side characters that distinguishes them from supporting characters. The...

Marvel Studios Countdown: Jessica Jones Jumps from 'Alias' to Netflix
Out of all of Marvel’s upcoming projects, the one with the least amount of “legacy” behind it is the Netflix series Jessica Jones. In fact, Marvel’s never even published a comic called Jessica Jones; the comic was called Alias, but that title was already claimed for TV by another popular action show. Casting rumors for the lead role on Jessica Jones have just started to ramp up, as Marvel builds towards its Defenders miniseries. Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad, Don’t Trust the B--- in Apartment 23), Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson, True Detective), Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies), Jessica De Gouw (Arrow) and Marin Ireland (Homeland) are in the running, according to Deadline’s sources. All the candidates seem like reasonable choices -- working...
