Children's Home Society of Virginia

At Children’s Home Society of Virginia, we want all children to realize their dreams. That’s why we are passionate about placing children of all ages into loving homes. We also provide related services to birth families, adoptive families and adoptees. We never turn away a birth mother in need.

We began our mission in 1900, when the Virginia General Assembly chartered our non-profit organization. Many things have changed in nearly 110 years, but one thing has not – children from all backgrounds deserve permanent homes where they will be loved and nurtured.

“Families are the source of hope and inspire success in the lives of young people,” said Nadine Marsh-Carter, president and CEO at Children’s Home Society. “Strong families are the foundation of strong healthy communities.”

Children’s Home Society is a private, non-sectarian adoption agency that serves the entire Commonwealth. We are headquartered in Richmond, with an office in Fredericksburg.

Our Services

Adoption services
CHS places healthy infants as well as infants and older children with special needs into permanent homes. Our nationally acclaimed Partnership for Adoptions program matches children in the custody of departments of social services with loving families wanting to adopt.

We hold regular orientations to help educate prospective parents about the adoption process. We also provide home studies, training and post-adoption services to those needing support in the years following placement.

Pregnancy and birth parent counseling
This is a free service available to anyone experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Our social workers help birth parents explore their options, enabling them to make the best plan for themselves and their child.

Foster care
This is a temporary arrangement where a child is cared for by a nurturing, loving family while permanent plans are made. Birth parents use this time to make decisions regarding their child’s future, as well as their own. Foster care is also used while legal steps are completed to release a child for adoption.

Adult adoptee counseling services
These services are provided to those seeking information on their heritage. CHS staff members can prepare a summary of adoption records, search for a birth family and facilitate a reunion.
