Stafford (WBQB/WFVA) -- A local doctor says the H1N1 virus can cause problems for pregnant women. Dr. Lia Shorter of the Women's Health and Surgery Center in Stafford says pregnant woman are considered high risk for H1N1 because their immune system is weak and they are prime candidates for pneumonia. She says she's admitted several women to the hospital because the swine flu has created severe breathing problems. Dr. Shorter says pregnant ladies can ONLY receive the vaccine by injection. She says the nasal spray contains a live virus. She says if you're pregnant you should stay away from anyone who has received the nasal spray. Dr. Shorter says the number of flu cases she's seen so far is way up over normal levels.
