May is officially recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. This awareness campaign was started in 1949 by the Mental Health America organization (then known as the National Association for Mental Health). As an affiliate of MHA, Mental Health America of Fredericksburg has celebrated mental wellness every May since our formation in 1955. Since the annual Walk for Mental Wellness was started 15 years ago, our staff and board of directors have been continually humbled by and appreciative of the outpouring of support and participation from supporters like you! When you walk, you are building community awareness for mental health and removing stigmas that prevent people from reaching out to get the help they need.
